Half a million people are expected to attend Latin America's largest food festival, taking place in Peru. Full Story: The flavors of Peru's world-renowned cuisine drew tens of thousands of people on Friday (September 7). The annual Mistura food festival is the largest food festival in Latin America. An estimated 500000 people are expected to attend the ten-day festival, which celebrates Peru's varied local cuisine amidst a vibrant, party-like atmosphere. The festival seeks to promote Peruvian cuisine as a basis for cultural identity, as well as for economic development. First lady Nadine Herrera attended. [Nadine Heredia, Peru First Lady]: "The great expectation is that what we could make in collaboration with our Andean diet cooks, that the labor of our producers will be recognized and our indigenous products we rediscovered." Attendees can also visit a "pisco" and coffee salon, which offers coffee tastings as well as lectures on the distinct varieties of pisco grapes used to make Peru's signature alcoholic beverage. In the "chocolate" corner of the festival, cacao producers from various regions of Peru knead and bake some 50 varieties of bread for customers, including breads made with molasses, cheese, corn and aniseed. The festival also offers international dishes from Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa, all of which have contributed to the development of Peru's unique cuisine.
